I can’t decide if there is a “best time” to visit Mohonk Mountain House. In the late fall when I was there, the trees were still colorful and the trails were not crowded. The first conference included 50 invited participants, but years later the attendees rose to 300 leaders in government and business. ✅ A “Barn Tour” may not sound like an interesting thing to do if you’re not a horse lover, but I highly recommend it.

Many of the rooms have working fireplaces, and I wish it would have been cold enough for me to have needed a fire. On our fall visit to Mohonk, we took a late-morning tour that filled us in on the history of Mohonk and its founding family, the Smileys, who still own and operate the hotel. The talk began in the lovely Lake Lounge, the hotel’s social center, flanked on two sides by a porch lined with rocking chairs. Mohonk now is very much an all-seasons resort, and each has its pleasures. My wife, Laurel, and I visited in June for the third time since October.
With some midweek, off-season exceptions, Mohonk is a full-American-plan hotel, so three meals are included in the daily charge. We enjoyed them even more on our June visit, when we walked through the gardens planted with peonies, rhododendron, roses, impatiens, miniature lilacs, iris, geraniums and Russian sage. We visited the Barn Museum, chock-a-block with farm equipment, ice-cutting tools and carriages once used at Mohonk. PricingMohonk's room rates have gone up quite a bit from the early days when a night's stay cost $3. Prices start at around $250 per person for a standard room on a weekday; add $165 for kids age 12 or older and $94 for 5 to 12 year olds (kids under five stay free). A 15 percent gratuity is added to the bill though staff won't refuse additional cash tips. Sunday brunch is especially bountiful (and popular with many day visitors), with offerings including salmon and shrimp and a dozen or so desserts including those silly messy chocolate fountains that kids love.
The Granary is also open during the nice weather months, offering an outdoor cookout experience that is near the small beach area. Check-in at Mohonk Mountain House begins at 4pm and check-out is at 12pm. A valid government-issued photo ID and major credit card are required upon check-in. Lake Mohonk is a glacial lake, fed from sky water, not from nearby streams. The lake is stocked with trout (perch, sunnys, bass, and pickerel can also be found). There is swimming at the beach, and guests enjoy canoeing, boating, and paddle boats. Dotting the majestic cliffs and the carriage roads are over 125 scenic summerhouses, a mainstay of the Mohonk experience since the early days.
