I can’t decide if there is a “best time” to visit Mohonk Mountain House. In the late fall when I was there, the trees were still colorful and the trails were not crowded. The first conference included 50 invited participants, but years later the attendees rose to 300 leaders in government and business. ✅ A “Barn Tour” may not sound like an interesting thing to do if you’re not a horse lover, but I highly recommend it.
Brewmaster’s Weekend
To love Mohonk is to appreciate the whole experience — its gorgeous setting and natural beauty and classic take on relaxation and recreation and service. If visiting in the winter, you have access to both an indoor skating rink and indoor heated pool, among many other activities like cross-country skiing and now, tubing. Many of the rooms have working fireplaces, and I wish it would have been cold enough for me to have needed a fire. For a quick history of the Mohonk Mountain House, it all began in 1869, when Albert Smiley paid $28,000 for a lake and 300 acres of rocky land that included a modest 10-room tavern.
Spring Family Fun Week
There's a sign-in and key card entry system but there is no lifeguard so kids need to be minded. I can only imagine how wonderful it is to stay here-we only we’re here for the day. If you book a spa treatment you have the run of the place except for the pool. Spring and summer bring their own special activities, including boating and swimming in the lake.
Events
Mohonk Mountain House consists of several wedding ceremonies and reception sites to meet your every wedding request. For your dream ceremony, you have the option of their formal gardens, mountain view gardens, and their main indoor venue, the Victorian Parlor. Mohonk Mountain House's reception spaces include the West Dining Room, East Dining Room, Sky Lake Conference House, Picnic Lodge, and Parlor Porch. Furthermore, each reception venue has a fantastic atmosphere and can be customized to fit your wedding needs.
Add to this a host of spa services, exercise classes and special programs, and a family will never want for something to do. Fixtures, carpeting, furniture and decor are either original or reproduction period pieces comfortably arranged in vast public spaces and the dozens of cozy nooks throughout the seven-story hotel. Hallways serve as a kind of vertical scrapbook, with photographs, paintings, maps, textiles, news clippings, floor plans and artifacts of the hotel’s history and geography, worthy of taking the time to review. Our Main Dining Room serves breakfast, lunch, and dinner daily, plus weekend brunch. On our fall visit to Mohonk, we took a late-morning tour that filled us in on the history of Mohonk and its founding family, the Smileys, who still own and operate the hotel. The talk began in the lovely Lake Lounge, the hotel’s social center, flanked on two sides by a porch lined with rocking chairs. Mohonk now is very much an all-seasons resort, and each has its pleasures. My wife, Laurel, and I visited in June for the third time since October.
With some midweek, off-season exceptions, Mohonk is a full-American-plan hotel, so three meals are included in the daily charge. We enjoyed them even more on our June visit, when we walked through the gardens planted with peonies, rhododendron, roses, impatiens, miniature lilacs, iris, geraniums and Russian sage. We visited the Barn Museum, chock-a-block with farm equipment, ice-cutting tools and carriages once used at Mohonk. Since our founding in 1869, wellness has been an essential part of the Mohonk experience. We carry that tradition forward today in our beautiful natural setting, offering a sampler of experiences that support resilience and sustainable self-care. We’ve gathered some of the most skilled illusionists and variety acts of our generation to create a weekend that is jam-packed with unforgettable experiences for all ages.
She enjoys exploring the back roads of the USA and uncovering stories about unique destinations, cultures and almost-forgotten history. Mohonk Mountain House is listed in the Historical Hotels of America, an official program of the National Trust for Historic Preservation that recognizes the finest historic hotels. Trying to “relax” is usually a chore for me, but walking the trails and absorbing the calming spirit of Mohonk made this resort a very special place for me. I really appreciate how visitors are encouraged to leave the hustle and bustle of everyday life behind. I know that the high price of Mohonk makes it impossible for some people to spend the night, but they do offer a Day Pass that is affordable so you can experience the trails and views. The abundant natural trails and emphasis on Nature reminded me of my time on Monhegan Island in Maine.

PricingMohonk's room rates have gone up quite a bit from the early days when a night's stay cost $3. Prices start at around $250 per person for a standard room on a weekday; add $165 for kids age 12 or older and $94 for 5 to 12 year olds (kids under five stay free). A 15 percent gratuity is added to the bill though staff won't refuse additional cash tips. Sunday brunch is especially bountiful (and popular with many day visitors), with offerings including salmon and shrimp and a dozen or so desserts including those silly messy chocolate fountains that kids love.
The Granary is also open during the nice weather months, offering an outdoor cookout experience that is near the small beach area. Check-in at Mohonk Mountain House begins at 4pm and check-out is at 12pm. A valid government-issued photo ID and major credit card are required upon check-in. Guests can arrive early on property to enjoy a full day of resort activities.
Lake Mohonk is a glacial lake, fed from sky water, not from nearby streams. The lake is stocked with trout (perch, sunnys, bass, and pickerel can also be found). There is swimming at the beach, and guests enjoy canoeing, boating, and paddle boats. Dotting the majestic cliffs and the carriage roads are over 125 scenic summerhouses, a mainstay of the Mohonk experience since the early days.
He'll also share some remarkable facts about the earliest days of this fabulous historic destination. Mohonk’s sesquicentennial festivities include the nonprofit Mohonk Consultations’ conference, “Creating and Sustaining Peace” (Nov. 1-3), which hotel guests can attend. Alaska and United offer nonstop service to Newark, N.J., and American, Delta, Southwest and United offer connecting service. On our December visit, we had dinner in the west dining room, more intimate than the main dining room but sharing the distinctive mountain-facing windows.
